As I celebrate another year around the sun, I can’t help but reflect on the things that bring me joy, keep me glowing, and make traveling feel like a breeze. Birthdays are the perfect time for gratitude and indulgence, so I’m sharing some of my favorite beauty and travel essentials that help me look and feel my best — whether I’m jet-setting to a new destination or pampering myself at home.

Beauty Favorites:

  1. Palmers Shimmer Oil & Shimmer Lotion: Nothing says radiant like glowing, hydrated skin. These two products have become staples in my beauty routine, giving me that sun-kissed shimmer without feeling greasy. I love using them for a night out or just when I want my skin to feel extra luxurious.
  2. Urban Decay 16-Hour Setting Spray: A must-have for any birthday celebration (or just life in general). This spray keeps my makeup flawless from morning to night, no touch-ups required. It’s the real MVP for keeping my look fresh while on the go.
  3. Topicals Lip Salve: Hydrated lips are a beauty essential, and this lip salve delivers. It’s nourishing, long-lasting, and gives my lips that soft, healthy shine without feeling sticky — perfect for keeping my pout birthday-ready.
  4. Lashes: A good pair of lashes takes any look to the next level. Whether I’m going for subtle glam or full-on drama, a reliable set of falsies makes me feel instantly polished and ready to celebrate.
  5. Highlighter: I never leave home without a little glow, and a stunning highlighter is my secret weapon for that lit-from-within look. A swipe on my cheekbones, nose, and cupid’s bow adds the perfect finishing touch.

Travel Must-Haves:

  1. Black Girl Sunscreen: Protecting my melanin-rich skin is a non-negotiable, and this sunscreen does it without leaving a white cast. It’s lightweight, hydrating, and perfect for any destination — beach, city, or mountains.
  2. Palmers Bond Oil: Traveling can do a number on your hair, especially with changing climates. This bond oil keeps my hair strong, shiny, and frizz-free, which is a lifesaver after long flights or humid adventures.
  3. Fenty Foundation Stick: Multi-tasking products are a traveler’s best friend. This foundation stick provides seamless coverage and is easy to throw in my purse for quick touch-ups on the go. Plus, Fenty never misses when it comes to inclusive shades that make my skin pop.
  4. Travel-size Products: I always stock up on mini versions of my skincare and beauty staples. They save space, make TSA a breeze, and ensure I never have to compromise my self-care routine while on the road.
  5. Skincare: A solid skincare routine is essential for looking fresh and feeling good while traveling. I pack hydrating masks, gentle cleansers, and a rich moisturizer to combat the effects of dry airplane air and new environments.

As I blow out my birthday candles this year, I’m filled with gratitude for life’s beautiful journeys, both literal and figurative. I hope these beauty and travel favorites inspire you to treat yourself and keep shining, no matter where life takes you. Here’s to another year of adventure, glow, and living life unapologetically radiant.

What are some of your must-have beauty and travel essentials? Let me know — I’m always down to add to my collection!

February is all about love, but beyond Valentine’s Day, it’s also Heart Health Month—a time to focus on taking care of the most vital organ in our bodies. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for Black women, yet it’s often overlooked in our community. Between juggling careers, family, and everything in between, we sometimes forget to prioritize our own well-being. This month, let’s change that by showing our hearts some love.

Here are three ways to protect your heart and invest in your health:

1. Nourish Your Body with Heart-Healthy Foods

What you put on your plate has a direct impact on your heart health. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats can help lower your risk of heart disease.

  • Leafy greens like spinach and kale are packed with heart-protective nutrients.
  • Berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries) are full of antioxidants that fight inflammation.
  • Healthy fats from avocados, nuts, and olive oil help lower bad cholesterol.
  • Omega-3-rich foods like salmon and flaxseeds support heart function.

Also, let’s not forget about hydration. Drinking enough water helps regulate blood pressure and keeps your heart working efficiently. And if you’re a coffee or tea lover, swap in some green tea for an added heart-healthy boost.

2. Get Moving – Your Heart Will Thank You

Exercise is one of the best ways to strengthen your heart, improve circulation, and reduce stress levels. But let’s be real—finding time to work out can be a challenge. The good news? You don’t have to hit the gym for hours to see results.

  • 30 minutes a day of movement (walking, dancing, yoga) can make a big difference.
  • Strength training helps improve heart health and overall endurance.
  • Curvy Cardio-style workouts (dance-based, fun fitness) make staying active enjoyable.

The key is finding an activity you love, so it doesn’t feel like a chore. Whether it’s a brisk walk, a dance class, or even stretching before bed, every bit of movement counts toward a healthier heart.

3. Prioritize Stress Management & Self-Care

Stress is a silent killer—especially for Black women, who often carry the weight of the world on their shoulders. Chronic stress can lead to high blood pressure, anxiety, and increased heart disease risk. This is why self-care isn’t selfish—it’s necessary.

Here are a few ways to manage stress and protect your heart:

  • Deep breathing & meditation – Just a few minutes a day can lower blood pressure.
  • Journaling & gratitude – Writing down your thoughts helps clear your mind.
  • Therapy & support groups – Talking to someone can lighten your emotional load.
  • Rest & quality sleep – Your heart needs downtime, too. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night.

Also, don’t hesitate to schedule that doctor’s appointment. Regular check-ups help monitor your blood pressure, cholesterol, and overall heart health.

Taking care of your heart is an act of self-love and self-preservation. Black women deserve to thrive, not just survive—and that starts with prioritizing our health.

This February, commit to making small but impactful changes that will keep your heart strong for years to come. Because the best love story of all is the one you have with yourself. Visit The Health Gap for more resources as well.

Taking care of your skin is more than just a beauty ritual—it’s a form of self-love and wellness. Black women often face unique skincare concerns such as hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, and sensitivity to certain treatments. That’s why choosing the right medspa facial can make all the difference in achieving radiant, healthy skin. Here are three game-changing facials designed with your skin’s needs in mind.

1. HydraFacial: Gentle yet powerful hydration

If your skin is feeling dry or dull, the HydraFacial is a game-changer. This treatment uses a patented three-step system to cleanse, exfoliate, and hydrate the skin. What sets it apart is its gentle yet effective approach—perfect for Black women who want to avoid harsh exfoliation that may lead to irritation. The best part? It’s completely customizable to target concerns like dark spots or congestion, leaving your skin with a dewy, youthful glow.

Why you’ll love it: Immediate results, zero downtime, and improved texture and hydration.

2. Chemical peels tailored for melanin-rich skin

Chemical peels can be intimidating for Black women due to the risk of hyperpigmentation, but when performed by skilled professionals using formulations suitable for darker skin, they can be transformative. Look for medspas that offer gentle, superficial peels with ingredients like lactic or mandelic acid. These peels help fade dark spots, improve skin tone, and boost collagen production.

Why you’ll love it: Achieves a brighter, more even complexion with reduced hyperpigmentation over time.

3. Oxygen facial: Glow from within

If you’re looking to rejuvenate your skin before a big event or just want a refreshing boost, the oxygen facial is a must-try. This non-invasive treatment delivers a concentrated stream of oxygen and nourishing serums directly to the skin. Oxygen facials are gentle enough for sensitive skin and can help with hydration, plumping fine lines, and improving overall radiance.

Why you’ll love it: Instant glow and revitalization without the risk of irritation.

Choosing the right medspa

To ensure the best results, seek out medspas that understand the unique skincare needs of Black women. Look for licensed professionals experienced in treating diverse skin tones and ask about customizations to suit your skin concerns.

Investing in your skin’s health is a step toward feeling and looking your best. Which of these facials will you try next? Let me know your go-to medspa treatments!

Great skin starts from the inside out, and what you put in your body directly affects your complexion. While a good skincare routine is essential, adding nutrient-packed smoothies to your diet can give your skin that radiant glow we all desire. Packed with vitamins, antioxidants, and hydration, these two smoothie recipes are perfect for promoting clear, luminous skin.

Berries are nature’s powerhouse for skincare. They’re rich in antioxidants that help protect your skin from environmental damage and boost collagen production. Pairing them with a splash of coconut water for hydration makes this smoothie a must-have for glowing skin.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup mixed berries (strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries)
  • 1/2 banana (for creaminess)
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds (packed with omega-3s for skin elasticity)
  • 1/2 cup coconut water
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk

Instructions:

  1. Combine all ingredients in a blender.
  2. Blend until smooth.
  3. Pour into a glass and enjoy immediately.

Glow Tip: Berries are also high in vitamin C, which can brighten your complexion over time.

Tropical Green Goddess Smoothie

Greens are your skin’s best friend, and when combined with tropical fruits, you get a refreshing glow-up drink. Spinach is loaded with skin-loving nutrients like vitamins A and C, while pineapple provides natural enzymes that promote smoother, more radiant skin.
